The theory behind disappearing and reappearing objects.

We have all been there…with our keys, phone, wallet, jewellery and other important items that we just can’t find when we need them. We swear that we put them in a specific spot and look there countless times and it still won’t be there. Then just as we have given up hope – bam! The item is there in plain sight – in that same spot you had searched and thought it would be.

I strongly believe that there has to be a logical explanation for most things – but sometimes something happens that logic just can’t explain.

Then there are other moments when this happens. Objects you swear you lost (and perhaps haven’t seen for weeks or even years) somehow magically find their way back to you in ways and locations you would not expect.

There are two most notable times in my life I can think of where this has happened to me.

The first time – is when I was 15. I brought a book I absolutely loved to my grandmother’s house to read (Why men don’t listen and women can’t read maps), but somehow on the way home, it just disappeared. It wasn’t in my bag (or anyone else’s) and my grandmother couldn’t find it at her place either. Years later, the book reappeared! It was hiding under my bedside table. How did it get there you ask?

The second time – happened to me only just the other day. We were leaving for an overseas trip. I carelessly had some earrings I loved in my pocket (with a few other items like keys) when we were about to board the train to go to the airport. I took the keys out to give to my husband, then a couple of hours later when we arrived at the airport, I reached into my pocket to get the earrings out and only found one. (In case you were wondering, these earrings from Amazon are very similar). I searched every millimetre of both those pockets in the pants, both when I had the pants on and even when I took them off. I thought to myself “oh it must have fallen out of my pocket when I took the keys out!” My heart sank because these were a special gift from my mother and I felt so guilty about losing one. Most of the trip I felt such pangs of sadness each time I wanted to wear them and couldn’t (unless I wanted to look like a pirate).
I put the one earring I still had in a small bag so at least I wouldn’t lose that. When we got back home, each time I was in the spot where I thought I lost the earring, I would look for a good ten minutes – but nothing. Fast forward to now – I was unpacking some more from the trip. I opened the small bag I put the one earring in, yet somehow – both were there! How did it get there you ask?

There are several theories as to why your precious items disappear then reappear (some make sense, some not so much but they are still interesting theories).

They go ‘beyond the barrier’
There is an old theory regarding dimensions and the fact that there is more than one. When certain items disappear temporarily, there is a theory that they are simply going ‘beyond the barrier’ into the next dimension which is not visible to anyone. When they reappear, they have been placed back into their original dimension (the one you live in).
There is a strong connection between you and the object(s)
As the old saying goes – “If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it was meant to be”. While the first part probably doesn’t make sense when talking about losing objects, the second part does have some meaning.
When an object we believe is lost forever somehow finds its way back to us, the theory and phenomenon is that object literally did teleport all the way back to you (or its mate – in the case of my earrings). Sounds crazy I know.
Absentmindedness
We all know the feeling of completing tasks we’ve done countless times without thinking about them – and instead thinking about something else (other than the tasks we’re doing). In doing this, we are not focussing our attention on what we are doing, therefore can easily leave say leave our new phone charger in the bottom of a bag you haven’t used in weeks and then wonder how it ended up there.
Our minds playing tricks on us
Have you ever been searching for something for what feels like forever then enlist someone else’s help and they find it in about five seconds? This could be your mind playing tricks on you. Sometimes when you’re looking for an everyday item (like some soap), and you actually see it, your mind doesn’t register that you have seen it because it’s something you see all the time and your brain thinks it’s not worth noting.

At least one of the above scenarios has probably happened to you at some point in your life. Sometimes it can be explained by logic and reason, sometimes the only explanation is one that defies logic. Regardless of the explanation, please thank the universe that your precious belongings have been returned 🙂
